I hear it all the time.
“You’re so brave,” people tell me. “How do you manage all this travel on your own?”
“But it’s so easy,” I say, baffled.
“Isn’t it dangerous? Especially for women? How do you afford it? Where do you start when you plan a year-long trip?” The questions keep coming and my eyebrows almost knit themselves into a monobrow as my confusion deepens.
Travelling comes so naturally to me now, it’s easy to forget I was asking the very same questions a few short years ago. I surprised my friends, my family and myself when I quit my job and flew to Ecuador in April 2014. I never thought I’d be the type to go off and explore far-flung corners of the world, let alone without someone by my side. But I did – and what was meant to be a three month trip turned into a four year odyssey around the world.
Planning and going on a long solo expedition can seem overwhelming at first. But honestly, there’s nothing to it. I’m 5’2″ with blonde hair and a tendency to trip over my own feet. If I can do it – and come out the other side as a changed person with a whole new outlook on life – anyone can. And that’s how I want to help. I want to inspire confidence in people who want to travel but need support and encouragement to book that one way flight.
Why should I listen to you?
After four years, I consider myself something of an expert in the realm of long-term, long-haul budget solo travel (there’s a niche if I ever saw one)! I’ve been to 28 countries and counting, experienced life on six continents and lived in Spain and Australia. I can be destination specific and provide personal recommendations.
I’m experienced – but more importantly I can empathise with the questions you’re asking yourself. Should I quit my job? How will this affect my career? What the heck am I thinking booking a one way flight to South America? Is it even safe? What will people think of me? I will help you get into the travelling mindset and provide the encouragement and reassurance you need to hear from someone who’s been there. I aim to boost your confidence and get you pumped for that road trip through the US, jungle trek in Central America or gap year in Southeast Asia.
These one-on-one coaching sessions are geared towards budget-conscious would-be travellers who are thinking about taking a trip, either on their own or with friends and other halves. Think of it as a friendly chat where you can pick my brains and ask me anything about travel. No pressure, no judgement – after all, I’m just a girl who never thought she could travel alone until she tried! And now I want you to do the same because if I know one thing it’s this – you will not regret it. In fact, I can honestly say that going travelling was the best decision I ever made.
Speaking of which, making the decision to go is the hardest part. Once you’re out there it’s easy, I promise! However, if you’d like further sessions before you travel or want to chat while you’re away or once you’re back, I offer subsequent sessions at a reduced rate.
Can’t I just read up on travel online?
Absolutely! I wholeheartedly encourage it. Travel blogs are an excellent resource and I still rely on them today. But sometimes it’s nicer to speak with someone in person, specifically someone who’s got the experience, know-how and passion to get you pumped for the road. I’ve collated so much information from travel blogs over the years that it’s probably more time effective to raid my expertise in a Skype session than sift through thousands of blogs hunting down answers to your specific questions.
My favourite two words of advice? Just go. Don’t wait until you’re retired. You’ll miss out on some amazing experiences that are best done when you’re young. And definitely don’t wait for the perfect time…simply because it will never come! There will always be a reason NOT to go – but my advice is go anyway. You’ll have a blast, learn so much about yourself and the world around you and, most importantly, you won’t go through life feeling like you’ve missed out on something huge.
There’s a big world out there and it’s ready for you – when you’re ready for it. And if you need a bit of extra encouragement, that’s where I come in. I’ll help you to take that tricky first step and shake up your life – in the best possible way!
